Michael Crumpler
Chief Executive OfficerMichael was appointed CEO of Credit Benchmark in June 2023 after serving in several key executive roles including most recently as Chief Operating Officer and Head of Risk. He is also a member of the Executive Committee.
Prior to joining Credit Benchmark in 2016, Michael worked at Goldman Sachs in the Credit Risk Management & Advisory group covering a diverse portfolio of entities across the natural resources and public finance sectors. Before Goldman, Michael spent over 10 years in other credit risk and banking roles at Barclays, Dexia and Moody’s Investors Service focused primarily on energy, infrastructure and U.S. public finance.
Michael holds a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a Bachelor of English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Donal Smith
Co-Founder and Executive ChairmanPrior to co-founding Credit Benchmark, Donal was CEO of Data Explorers (acquired by IHS Markit in 2012 and subsequently S&P Global in 2022). Previously he held roles at Thomson Reuters including CEO of Thomson Financial in Europe and Asia. He was CEO of FT.com and Director of Electronic Publishing for the Financial Times Group, and held non-executive roles at Financial News, BISAM S.A., Reach plc and Selerity Inc. He is currently Chairman of Rimes Technologies, and DeHavilland/Forefront Group, and is a non-executive director of Pirum. Donal holds a BA in the History of Art and English Literature from University College Dublin.
Mark Faulkner
Co-FounderMark has an established track record in bringing transparency to rapidly-developing areas of financial services. Alongside his business partner Donal Smith, he co-founded Credit Benchmark in 2013, introducing the world’s most comprehensive source of consensus credit risk data. In 1994, Mark spotted an opportunity to provide customers in the securities financing industry with independent specialist advice and services. The company he founded, Data Explorers, became the leading provider of securities lending data across all global market sectors, and was acquired by IHS Markit in 2012. Mark graduated from the London School of Economics and held management roles at LM Moneybrokers, Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers.
Jan Hammer
Board MemberJan joined Index in 2010. His investments include Adyen, BitPay, Credit Benchmark, Just Eat, Novus, Robinhood, Socialbakers, Zendesk and Zuora. Jan is particularly interested in financial services disruption and information services across all stages. Jan works with The Prince’s Trust as a business mentor to young startup entrepreneurs. Prior to joining Index, Jan worked at General Atlantic in London, where he was involved with investments with Kaspersky Lab, Northgate Information Solutions and Torex Retail. Before joining General Atlantic, Jan worked at Morgan Stanley in M&A, TMT, and Capital Markets divisions in London and New York. Jan holds an MBA with Distinction from INSEAD, and is a graduate of Oxford University.
Michael Sherwood
Board MemberMichael is a senior director of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. He retired in 2016 as vice chairman of the firm and co-chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs International, roles he assumed in 2008 and 2005, respectively. Michael first joined Goldman Sachs in 1986 and became a partner in 1994. He was head of the Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Division in Europe before becoming global co-head of the Securities Division in 2003.
Michael is a member of the Westminster Abbey Campaign Development Board, a sponsor of the Harefield Academy, chairman of Greenhouse Sports and a trustee of Grenada Schools and the Serpentine Galleries. Michael is a director of Credit Benchmark, Moscot Inc. and Revolut. Michael earned a BA from the University of Manchester in 1986.
Tim Bunting
Board MemberTim joined Balderton as a General Partner in 2007. He was previously a partner of Goldman Sachs where he spent 18 years. At Goldman, Tim held various roles including Global Head of Equity Capital Markets (2002 to 2005) and Vice-Chairman of Goldman Sachs International (2005 to 2006). Tim started to work with Balderton and its portfolio of companies in 2005. In 2006 Tim spent a period as non-executive chairman of Betfair. Tim is also a Governor of Wellington College and the Wellington Academy; a Trustee of the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Education: Tim is a graduate of the University of Cambridge.
